Custom “From” address in gmail Posted on October 15th, 2009 by

Having your Gustavus email automatically forward to a Gmail account can sometimes cause confusion with students and colleagues (“Which email should I use to contact you?”), or in some cases, since the email is coming from outside the Gustavus domain, it may get caught in a colleague’s spam filter.   However, in the “Accounts & Import” tab of the Gmail “Settings” you can add another outgoing mail server.  Then, when you compose a message you can choose whether it comes from your Google account or your Gustavus account.  Even better, you can specify that if you receive a message from a Gustavus email address, when you reply to it, Gmail should automatically use the Gustavus outgoing mail server.  Now people who send a message to your Gustavus email will think you are replying from your Gustavus account even though you are actually using the Gmail interface.  To set this up, follow the directions for “I’m a Gmail or Google Apps user sending from an external address” and when it asks for your Gustavus SMTP information, you can get that information from this GTS wiki entry.
